What Stafford County offers

Stafford has riverfront parks, historic sites like Aquia Church and George Washington’s boyhood home at Ferry Farm, and busy shopping areas around Garrisonville and Route 1. Falmouth, the town across from Old Town Fredericksburg, was home to the artist Gari Melchers; his house, Belmont, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A little history

Virginia established Stafford County in 1664 and named it for Staffordshire, England. George Washington spent much of his childhood at Ferry Farm along the Rappahannock River. Aquia Church, built in 1757, is a National Historic Landmark, and Aquia Creek sandstone quarried on Government Island was used to build the White House and the U.S. Capitol. During the Civil War, more than 100,000 troops occupied the county over several years, and about 10,000 enslaved people left area plantations and crossed the river to the Union lines in 1862.
