About Ladysmith

Ladysmith is an unincorporated community in Caroline County, on U.S. Route 1 and State Route 639 about a mile west of I-95 exit 110. That quick interstate access makes it a favorite for commuters who want newer homes and more land.

It is a short drive to Fredericksburg to the north and Richmond to the south.

What Ladysmith offers

Ladysmith is home to St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic church, a Caroline County convenience site and the Pendleton Golf Club nearby. The post office has been here since 1928.

A little history

The origin of the name is uncertain. It may come from the South African town, or from the mother of a woman named Clara Smith. The post office opened in 1928. The Oliver Cemetery, a burial ground for enslaved people and their descendants, is here, and radar surveys suggest up to about 300 burials. William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition was born in the area in 1770.
