About Fredericksburg City

The City of Fredericksburg sits at the fall line of the Rappahannock River, about 42 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 53 miles north of Richmond. It is a small city, only about 10.5 square miles of land, with a little over 30,000 people.

It is an independent city, which means it is not part of any county. The City runs its own government, schools, water and sewer and trash collection. I love helping people find the right corner of it.

What Fredericksburg City offers

Besides the university, major local employers include Mary Washington Healthcare and GEICO. The city welcomes about 1.5 million visitors a year, so there is always something going on downtown. City Hall is on Princess Anne Street, and the city handles its own utility billing.

A little history

Fredericksburg was declared a port in 1728 and named for Frederick, Prince of Wales, the father of King George III. It was incorporated as a town in 1781 and became an independent city in 1879. The Battle of Fredericksburg took place here in December 1862. Mary Washington, George Washington’s mother, lived in the city in a house that still stands today, and her son’s boyhood home at Ferry Farm sits just across the river.

Is new construction available?

Limited. The city covers only about 10.45 square miles, so new homes tend to be smaller infill projects and pockets in newer areas such as Idlewild rather than huge subdivisions. Ask me for the newest listings and builder inventory.
