What Bowling Green offers

The Caroline County courthouse, built in 1835, anchors the town. You will find county offices, local shops and restaurants, and a number of historic buildings, including the Kilwinning Crosse Masonic Lodge. Newer homes are going in nearby, and the town runs its own water and sewer service.

A little history

The town was first known as New Hope. It became the county seat in 1803 when Dache Carmine, owner of the Bowling Green plantation, donated land for the courthouse, and the town took the plantation’s name. Bowling Green was incorporated around 1837. It has been called the “cradle of American horse racing,” and the Bowling Green plantation house (circa 1741) is described as the oldest continuously inhabited residence in Virginia.
